The Incompetence of ACC Refs

embarrassed

Not travelling in the ACC.

Billy D'Andrea's Letter To IPTAY Reps

I hope when you receive this it finds you and your family preparing for the holiday season. We are excited about our football team's opportunity to play in the Meineke Car Care Bowl in Charlotte December 31st at noon against rival South Florida.

I realize there has been a lot of chatter, rumors and innuendos, and everyone has a lot of answers on these internet sites and web sites. I'm sure you have heard some people expressing their concerns about not joining IPTAY next year.

First, I want to thank each and every one of you for all your support and leadership this fall. Jason does a great job of keeping our staff apprised of various IPTAY Rep activity and we are pleased with the number of new members that have joined through your leadership.

I'm confident with the decisions made as we move forward, and optimistic these emotional outburst will settle down and IPTAY will continue to show strong support and ticket sales. We have a place in Clemson that will always display more loyalty and support than our critics. So stay positive, support our teams by encouraging donors we need their contributions now more than ever. And the bottom line is if they do come out, they are only hurting our opportunities for our student-athletes and Clemson. Therefore, when you hear negative comments, I know you will take the high road. IPTAY and Clemson will be here long after we're gone and I'm confident IPTAY will continue its strong historic support of Clemson Athletics.

I want to again thank you for all you do to support IPTAY and wish you and your family the very Merriest Christmas and New Year.

Jim Barker and The BOT Don't Care About Winning

When Jim Barker said yesterday that "Terry Don Phillips has done an outstanding job as our director of athletics" in spite of the fact that Clemson is 1-7 against South Carolina this academic year, despite not winning an Men's ACC Championship since 2006, despite the large majority of Olympic Sports getting worse over the last eight years, the message was loud and clear.   Simple put Jim Barker and The Board of Trustee's do not view winning championships as a priority.

State Of Clemson's AD

We along with many other beat writers, blogs and others in and around Clemson expected that Terry Don Phillips was not going to survive as Clemson's Athletic Director, but all that changed on Friday when Terry Don Phillips along with his lawyers meet with Jim Barker.

What caused the change of tune it up for speculation.  A number of rumors tune have surfaced since after the meeting including the following:

- Jim Barker didn't want to payout the remainder of Terry Don Phillip's contract valued at roughly $1.1 Million over the next 32 months.

- Terry Don Phillip's threatened a lawsuit that would be played out in public where Phillips' defense would be to shift blame back onto Barker for pushing or signing off on a lot of the issues that Phillip's is now catching heat on.

- It was just a normal job evaluation between Barker, Phillips and his lawyers

Regardless of the reason for sticking with Phillips, it is crystal clear that the leadership at Clemson University doesn't care what the fans think no matter how many letters, emails and calls they receive expressing their displeasure with the current state of the athletic department.  They know that the fans will simply continue to hand over their money to IPTAY year after year regardless of the results of the field.

I am not going to tell people how to spend their dollars, but I do encourage people to take a stand whether that be by withholding money from IPTAY, withholding money from the Clemson Fund, boycotting products from BOT's companies, joining "Fire Terry Don Phillips" Facebook group, joining a grassroots protest or any other way of expressing your displeasure.

Da'Quan Bowers Wins Ted Hendrick's Award

Da'Quan Bowers Win Ted Hendrick's Defensive End Of The Year Award.

Congrats to Da'Quan!

The year is 2029

The year is 2029....Its opening day at Death Valley, and the stadium is filled to its 126,843 capacity. All in orange. All waving orange flags. They cheer for their Tigers, celebrating the back to back national championships, and 4 out of the last 8 national championships. They are a dynasty. The media speculates "is this the greatest team ever?" Clemson, synonomous with "college football", is the envy of every other program in America.

The Four Horseman, Cherone Peak, Martravias Bryant, Mike Bellamy and of course Sammy Watkins, are in attendance. Dabo has always credited them with being the Spark that turned around Clemson’s fortune. Though Clemson never actually won a national title while they were there, the 3 ACC championships they won put Clemson squarely back in the mix for the national title hunt from their perch on top of the ACC.

Watkins, being Clemson's first Heisman Trophy winner and first #1 pick was greeted with roar, many still wearing his retired #1 jersey. Bellamy, a two-time NFL MVP and first ballot Hall of Famer raised his hand to the crowd, and nearly blinded all from the shine of his 4 super bowl rings. Peake and Bryant recently retired from the NFL as annual pro-bowlers and defining Clemson's new reputation as "Wide Reciever U".

Just beside the four horseman, are three former Tiger walk-ons: Will Swinney, Drew Swinney, and Clay Swinney. Will is now an assistant coach at Alabama. Drew, a successful attorney in Atlanta. And Clay, who defied the odds and is now a starting wide receiver for the Tennessee Titans. They stand there, in awe. Tears flowing from their face as they think back to all the practices, hours in the weight room, and tough victories over ACC foes. They are all champions. It has all come to this. This one moment. They know this is what they worked for. They know what it feels like to achieve your dream.

Then...an announcement is made, and a banner is dropped...

The West Zone will be renamed...the Dabo Swinney Zone. Suddenly, 126,843 chant "Dabo! Dabo!" at the top of their lungs, and thank God that they were patient with Dabo. He asked for patience. He delivered.

Clemson vs. South Carolina - Sports Report Card

Clemson is currently 1-7 head-to-head in sports this academic year against South Carolina after an embarrasing 29-7 home loss to South Carolina on the football field and a 64-60 defeat in Men's Basketball.  The lone bright spot remains a win by the women's volleyball team.  This poor performance against South Carolina comes on the heels of USC eliminating Clemson from the College World Series in June.

Clemson Recruits Performance - 12/3/2010

Mike Bellamy had 18 carries for 47 yards in Charlotte's 28-12 loss to Armwood.  Bellamy also had 3 receptions for 51 yards. It was the first game since Bellamy's freshmen season that he was held without a touchdown.  Bellamy finished his career 5th on the state all-time rushing list with 7,316 yards.

Charone Peake was held to 3 catches for 14 yards in Dorman's 34-14 loss to Byrnes in the State Championship Game.  Byrnes rolled a safety to double cover Peake at all times.  Peake finished the season with 65 catches for 1,054 yards.

Adam Humphries had a one yard touchdown run in Dorman's 34-14 loss to Byrnes in the State Championship Game.

Sammy Watkins had 3 grabs for 110 and a touchdown.  Watkins put the Wolfpack on his back late in the fourth quarter leading South Forth Myers to a 28-21 come from behind win against Bradenton Southeast.  The Wolfpack were down 7 late in the fourth quarter when Watkins hauled in a 68 yard touchdown pass to tie the game.  Watkins then took a punt to the house from 60 yards out to put South Fort Myers up 28-21 with 68 seconds left in the game.  South Fort Myers advanced to the State 3A state semifinals against Miami-Norland.

Clemson Basketball Analysis - Through 7 Games

by OrangeBandit.

OrangeBandit is a former college player and current high school basketball coach. His take on the season was written prior to the announcement yesterday that Noel Johnson was transferring.

Here is our problems.

1. At the top of the list is the poor play of Devin Booker and Noel Johnson. Honestly I never anticipated this. I thought Booker would average around 10 PPG and 6-7 RPG. At this level of play, Booker isn't going to get close to that points average. I knew he'd struggle some because his basketball IQ isn't the highest. He is the typical monster athlete that has survived totally on his size and athleticism. I heard that Noel Johnson had a great offseason, but that was obviously incorrect. Noel still has absolutely no clue what he's doing on defense and offensively, he's still a catch and shoot guy and that's it. He's actually developed 0% since last year. Let that resonate for just a second.

2. Our defense was supposed to carry us early on. I actually predicted that we might have a top three defense in the conference. I still see players making awful fundamental mistakes and made a bad prediction that Brownell would be able to work it out of this quickly. I watched time after time players defending the man in the corner the same way they did under Oliver Purnell, which was to force him to one side (that part is OK) and at the same time give them a straight line drive to the basket (this part is as awful as most 9th grade players I see). When did staying between your man and the basket EVER get confusing? I will say at least we're trying to help each other on dribble penetration. It's just both sad and pathetic how little OP ever taught in this regard because returning players should be having zero problems with dribble drive rotations by this point in their collegiate careers and I still don't see backside wings dropping to the open men in the corner on the drive and kick scenarios and the help scrambling to cover the man they left. That's something I teach to my kids at the HS level and if they can actually execute that better than CU's players.

3. It's obvious as to why Brad Brownell gave up the NCAA allowed team practice time to focus on individual development. We've got exactly ONE player who can consistently beat his man 1 on 1 in Demontez Stitt and even he's not used to doing it this much and is struggling at times because of the saddle that we have hitched to his back. Again, Devin Booker is the most physical imposing specimen on the floor on most any night and even if he doesn't know where to go what to do, he can at the bare minimum be aggressive on the offensive boards AND stop being a weak in the block and fading away instead of attacking the chest of the post defender. Honestly, I can totally tell he's missing the "leadership", aka pressure, given to him by the presence of his brother, Trevor Booker, last year. He didn't know much last year but at least he played hard. I haven't seen him play hard one single game this season which is inexcusable. Personally, I'd sit him and start Milton Jennings who is much weaker and needs more development, but is at least producing more and send the message to Booker before we get into conference play.

4. Corey Stanton who is 5'9" is outperforming Noel Johnson and maybe Tanner Smith in games against quality competition. How's that for analysis? Noel and Tanner are killing me/us.

5. Offensively we're actually getting better at moving. However, we're so small and non-explosive off the dribble that good help defensive teams give us fits. Young and Stanton are solid players, but can be limited by longer athletes which leads me to my last point.......... The only thing that truly is going to fix our problems is recruiting.

Our only hope right now is that Devin Booker and Noel Johnson finally get their headsinto the game, while Tanner somehow figures out a way to keep from having 5 negative plays in a 7 play span like he did against Michigan. While the game was on the line I might add. Those 3 players have much simpler fixes to their games that they could do that would at least make them positive contributors instead of albatrosses. Most of which is mental which has to be driving Brownell crazy.

We also have to bear in mind how little overall time Brownell has had with the team. This is a MASSIVE retooling of a program that survived for 6 years on a gimmicky scheme and a bunch of hustle and effort. We're switching to a much more cerebral approach by players who haven't ever been trained on how to think and then react. They've just been asked to react. They'll get there, but it's apparent now it's going to take longer than originally anticipated due to certain key players not developing at an acceptable rate and that the cupboard was pretty bare to begin with. A walk-on was playing actual minutes last night in a 10 point ball game with Michigan. If that's not an indictment on the talent Brownell is having to play with then I don't know what else to say.

Terry Don Phillips – Thursday Early PM Update

Terry Don Phillips - Wednesday Early PM Update

This is some of the information that we have been hearing regarding Terry Don Phillips’ status as Clemson Athletic Director.

-  Terry Don Phillips is under contract for approximately 18 more months.  The value remaining on the contract is worth an estimated $1 Million.

-  If Clemson were to "fire" Terry Don Phillips prior to the end of his contract then Clemson University would owe him the remainder of the contract similar to buyout that Clemson paid to Tommy Bowden.

-  If Clemson were to "fire" TDP “with cause” then Clemson University is not required to pay the buyout.

-  Alledgedly, Clemson used the fiasco around the Women’s Soccer program along with some other performance issues to throw the "with cause" chip on the table.  See Women's Soccer Fiasco for more information on that story.

-  The official announcement will likely not be until next week

Reading between the lines in my opinion, Clemson used “firing with cause” as a negotiating chip to try and reduce the money owed to Terry Don Phillips for terminating his contract. If Clemson were to “fire with cause” it would likely evolve into a lengthy legal battle (see Mike Leach) that could get ugly. In order to avoid a court battle, the two parties will hammer out a buyout that is less that the $1 Million that Terry Don Phillips is owed under the terms of the contract. Terry Don Phillips will likely official “resign” as opposed to being fired as is usually the case.

Terry Don Phillips - Wednesday Early PM Update

Terry Don Phillips - Thursday Early PM Update

Here is what The Avenue of Champions has been able to gather from various sources inside and outside the Athletic Department on the developing situation with Terry Don Phillips.

-  The Clemson Board of Trustees (BOT) has taken a stronger stance against Terry Don Phillips and the overall performance of the Clemson Athletic Department since around the midway point of this football season.

-  James Barker conducted interviews with Athletic Department employees in regards to Terry Don Phillips' performance as Athletic Director and the overall work enviroment inside the AD during the month of November.  The results of these interviews were far from glowing.

-  The BOT recommended that James Barker fire Terry Don Phillips in the wake of the loss to USC

-  James Barker followed through on the request from the BOT

-  Terry Don Phillips responded by lawyering up for a meeting that is taking place today

-  Terry Don Phillips is not expected to walk away from this meeting as Athletic Director of Clemson University although TDP could stay around for the remainder of the year (12/31/10)

-  Billy D'Andrea expected to be the AD in the interim

Clemson vs. South Carolina - Sports Report Card

Clemson is currently 1-6 head-to-head in sports this academic year against South Carolina after an embarrasing 29-7 home loss to South Carolina on the football field.  The lone bright spot is a win by the women's volleyball team.  This poor performance against South Carolina comes on the heels of USC eliminating Clemson from the College World Series in June.  Clemson Basketball faces South Carolina on December 5th.

Clemson Recruit Performance - 11/26/10

Mike Bellamy had 27 carries for 168 yards in Charlotte's 7-0 win over Cape Coral.  Bellamy scored the only touchdown on a 5 yard pitch and dash to the pylon.  Bellamy also broke a 48 yard run only to be stripped at the one yard line through the endzone for a touchback.  The fumble was one of two on the day for Bellamy.  Bellamy also had 2 interceptions on defense.  Bellamy is now 5th on the state all-time rushing list with 7,269 yards.

Marlin Lane and Mainland's season is over after a first round loss in the playoffs.

Charone Peake snaged 5 passes for 118 yards in Dorman's 30-19 victory over Irmo.  Peake and Dorman will face Byrnes for the state championship next week.

Adam Humphries returned from an injury to his lower spine that forced him to miss the last 3 games.  In the 30-19 win over Irmo, Humphries has 1 catch for 12 yards and a couple pass break-ups on defense.

Eric MaClain and Jack Britt's season is over after a loss in the second round of the playoffs.

Tony McNeal and Chester's season is over after a loss in the South Carolina Playoffs.

Cole Stoudt and Dublin-Coffman's season is over after a loss in the Ohio Playoffs.

Robert Smith and Woodland's season is over after a loss in the South Carolina Playoffs. Smith projects as a DB for Clemson.

Cortez Davis and Mainland's season is over after a first round loss in the playoffs.  Davis projects to play DB for Clemson.

Stanton Seckinger put up a ridiculous 9 catches for 332 yards and 2 touchdowns in the Oasis All-Star Shrine Classic.  South Carolina lost to North Carolina 31-24.  Seckinger had touchdowns of 20 and 95 yards in the loss.

2010 - ACC Defensive Talent Ranking

2010 - ACC Offensive Talent Analysis

This piece digs a little deeper into the talent level on each Atlantic Coast Conference team by focusing on the offensive side on the ball. The raw data comes from Rival.com prospect ratings and is calculated as followed.

5.7 = 1.00 point
5.8 = 1.25 points
5.9 = 1.50 points
6.0 = 1.75 points
6.1 = 2.00 points

Players under 5.7 were not calculated into the raw data as a way to limit complexity.

The 2006, 2007, 2008 classes are weighted at 100% while the 2009 class is weighted at 75% and 2010 is weighted at 25% due to a lot of players redshirting. Important to note is that this data only includes current players on the roster, so attrition is factored into the equation in this data, but not factored in here.

Photobucket

There is more separation in the defensive analysis than the offensive analysis. Miami is still leading the pack and their is a gap and then Florida State who is transitioning under first year DC, Mark Stoops and then a gap and then Clemson and then a gap and Virginia Tech followed closely by Virginia Tech and Georgia Tech.
Photobucket

Miami has the most talent on paper along the DL lead by Allen Bailey and Marcus Fortson and Florida State is second although their talent along the DL is overrated lead by 5-Star bust Markus White. They are also really young with mostly SO and FR in the 2-Deep outside of White. Clemson is right their on the same tier as FSU, but gets better production than the Noles. North Carolina have the most productive DL in the ACC and comes in fourth in talent, but with studs Robert Quinn and Marvin Austin suspended their talent level takes a huge hit.

Photobucket

Miami is also the most talented on paper at LB lead by Collin McCarthy and Sean Spence followed by Virginia Tech although I don't see the same talent on the field as I do on paper especially after VT lost a bunch of defensive starters.

The best two LBing groups in the ACC are North Carolina and Boston College although neither cracks the Top 3 of talent on paper. Both teams were able to find and develop underrated stars in Bruce Carter, Quan Sturdivant, Luke Kuechly and Mark Herzlig.

Photobucket

Miami sweeps the positional rankings, but Clemson is right their on the same tier. Miami is lead by star corner Brandon Harris while Clemson is lead by star safety DeAndre McDaniel.

Miami has a decent edge is overall offensive talent and then their is a 2nd Tier that includes Clemson, Virginia Tech, Florida State and North Carolina that have pretty similar talent levels and then a 3rd Tier that includes North Carolina State, Virginia and Maryland that again have pretty similar raw talent.

Georgia Tech runs a variation of the Wing-T offense under Paul Johnson and recruits players that do not fit the mold of your traditional offensive recruit that recruiting analyst rank, so their ranking is pretty much irrelevant.

Photobucket

Quarterback talent is the most difficult to quantify statistically because unlike the OL and Backs & Receivers to suceed at QB a team only needs one player to step-up and it doesn't really matter if the player is a 5-Star prospect like Tyrod Taylor or a 4-Star player like Jacory Harris and Kyle Parker a 3-Star player like Christian Ponder or even a 2-Star player like Russell Wilson. Definitely take the QB data with a huge grain of salt.

Photobucket

Offensive line play is the most important factor in making an offense success in my opinion, but is also the most hard to scout, which puts a lot of weight on the offensive line coach to scout and develop the talent that they recruit.

Clemson, Virginia Tech and Miami have the most talent on paper in the ACC.

Photobucket

- Miami has the most talent at the skill positions (RB, WR, TE) lead by a star-studded wide receivers Travis Benjamen, Aldrius Johnson and Leonard Hankerson.

- UNC is second with another talented wide receiving group lead by the currently suspended Greg Little, Jheranie Boyd and Dwight Jones.

- Clemson is third with the tandem on Andre Ellington and Jamie Harper in the backfield.

Clemson vs. South Carolina - Fall 2010

Clemson needs to win this Saturday to reverse what has been tough 365 days for Tiger sports teams against South Carolina. It started last year with the football team suffering an embarrasing 34-17 loss in Columbia and culminated with Clemson being knocked out of the CWS by losing two straight games to the Gamecocks in Omaha. Clemson is still able to hang it's hat on a 72-61 win in Men's Basketball. As you can from the table below, Clemson is currently 1-5 head-to-head in fall sports against South Carolina.

Sammy Watkins Commits To Clemson

Sammy Watkins committed to Clemson today choosing the Tigers over a multitute of offer from around the country including Miami, Michigan, Florida and Florida State.  Watkins out of South Fort Myers High School in Fort Myers, FL is ranked as the #3 WR prospect and #25 overall prospect in the country by Rivals.com.  Watkins has 37 receptions for 885 yards and 10 touchdowns as a senior to go with 46 catches for 1146 yards and 14 toudowns as a junior.

Pros:
- Explosive athlete
- Blistering top-end speed
- Dynamic playmaker capable of scoring on any touch
- Quickness in and out of breaks

Cons:
- Needs more polish as a WR
- Injury concerns after missing a few games in both his JR and SR season

Sammy Watkins in my opinion is the best wide receiver prospect that Clemson has signed since Roscoe Crosby back in 2001.  A solid comparison to Sammy Watkins is a cross between CJ Spiller and Jacoby Ford.  Watkins is extremely explosive and capable of breaking a big play for a touchdown with every touch similar to Spiller; however, Watkins doesn't posses quite the top-end speed as either Spiller or Ford.  In the 40 yard dash, Watkins has been timed in the upper 4.3 to low 4.4 range. Watkins is more explosive after the catch than Ford who mainly just relied on pure speed.  Physically, Watkins, is taller than both Spiller and Ford at 6'1", but will benefit from adding more bulk to his frame (190ish).

Sammy Watkins adds another threat to an already loaded recruiting class at the skill position that features  Charone Peake (4-Star), Martavis Bryant (4-Star), Adam Humphries (3-Star) and Stanton Seckinger (2-Star) committed at WR to go with Mike Bellamy (5-Star) and Marlin Lane (4-Star) committed at RB.

Watkins will play in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl in January in San Antonio

Clemson Recruit Performance - 11/18/10

Mike Bellamy Erupts Against Gulf Coast

Marlin Lane had 13 carries for 83 yards in Mainland's 29-28 defeat to Orange Park.  Lane also had 4 catches for 55 yards in the loss.  The defeat ends Mainland's season with a 5-6 record.

Charone Peake snaged 8 passes for 118 yards and two scored in Dorman's 49-28 victory over Fort Dorchester.  Peake also added a punt return for a touchdown.  Peake caught a 21 yard touchdown reception then returned a punt 70 yards for touchdown and then caught a 35 yards touchdown pass all in the opening 15 minutes of the game.  Peake went over 2,500 yards receiving on his career in the victory.

Adam Humphries missed Dorman's 49-21 win over Fort Dorchester with a injury to his lower spine. It was the third game in a row that Humpries has missed due to the injury. His status for next Saturday is questionable.

Eric MaClain and Jack Britt lost 54-36  to Seventy-First. Jack Britt ended the season 10-2 with their only two losses of the season to Seventy-First.  No stats were available for MaClain who will play TE for Clemson.

Cortez Davis had 5 catches for 84 yards and 2 touchdowns in Mainland's 29-28 loss to Orange Park. Davis hauled in touchdown receptions of  25 and 30 yards.  Davis projects to play defensive back for the Tiger's next fall

Stanton Seckinger leads Porter-Gaud into the SCISA Championship game today against Hammond.  Hammond has won four straight SCISA crowns and 7 in a row against Porter-Gaud.  Seckinger has 83 receptions for 1,643 yards and 24 touchdowns on the year.

Mike Bellamy erupts against Gulf Coast

Charlotte (11-0) runningback, Mike Bellamy exploded for 241 yards on only 15 carries and 4 touchdowns in a 49-11 win of Naples Gulf Coast (3-8).  Bellamy, a Clemson committment, only played in the first half of the victory.

Bellamy got the scoring started with a 17 yards sprint to the left corner of the endzone.  Bellamy took over in the second quarter with touchdown runs of 67, 1 and 65 yards.  Bellamy averaged 16.1 yards per carry on the game.

Bellamy now has 2,165 yards and 40 touchdowns on the season on the season.  Bellamy also went over the 7,000 yard mark for his career, the 7th player in Florida history to do so, finshing the game with 7,101 yards.  Emmitt Smith is the leading rusher in Florida history with 8,304 yards.

A few biases to consider when looking at the data.

1)  Scouting services tend to focus more heavily on scouting the Southeast compared to the Northeast and the Midwest. Recruits for the Midwest and Northeast;have a much better chance of falling through the cracks than prospects from the Southeast, Texas, California.  I doubt any scouting service has ever stepped foot in places like Wisconsin or Connecticut.

2)  Schools with larger fanbases have a tendency to to have committed recruits get a "bump" in the rankings.

Porter-Gaud, WR, Stanton Seckinger To Clemson

Stanton Seckinger committed to Clemson last night after mulling over an offer from NC State and strong interest from Virginia, Vanderbilt and Memphis. Seckinger out of Porter-Gaud in Charleston has been one of the most talked about players in the Charleston area this year along with Goose Creek’s Brandon Shell from Summerville’s De’Angelo Henderson. The 6’5” 200 pound Seckinger plays WR and DE for the Cyclones, but was recruited as a WR for Clemson. Seckinger has racked up 90 catches for 1660 yards and 24 touchdowns on the year heading into the SCISA Championship game this weekend against Hammond. Seckinger currently has a 5.4 2-Star rating on Rivals.com.

Pros:
- Really good hands, high points the football,
- Good frame and big body with growth potential
- Solid athleticism
- Excellent leaper

Cons:
- Average top-end speed
- Average quickness and foot speed
- Extremely weak competition in HS

I view Stanton Seckinger as a similar prospect to Brandon Ford. Seckinger like Ford was recruited as a WR by Clemson, but ultimately looks like a better fit at TE due to their body type and lack of top-end speed. Both have really good hands and leaping ability as well. Seckinger will have a lot of competition at WR with so many young talented WR currently in the program, so long-term a move to TE similar to the move Ford made this year might be Seckinger’s best option to get on the field. I think this is a bit of a questionable take by Clemson. I actually like Seckinger as a prospect a lot and think Rivals has him slightly underrated at 2-Stars, but Clemson already has Charone Peake (4-Star), Martavis Bryant (4-Star) and Adam Humphries (3-Star) committed at WR. We are in a great position for another WR in Sammy Watkins (5-Star). I just don’t see WR as a position of need at this time. I think adding another DT or another LB would be a better use of this scholarship.

Seckinger will either wait to enroll in January of 2012 or pay his own way for the first semester before going on scholarship in January of 2012. In football vernacular this is called a grayshirt, which enables Clemson to count Seckinger towards the 2012 class as opposed to the 2011 class. Seckinger is the first player to get a Division I scholarship from Porter-Gaud since Ovie Mughelli who committed to Wake Forest in 1998 and now plays FB for the Atlanta Falcons.

On Paper BCS Talent Rankings - Rivals.com

On Paper BCS Rankings - Scout.com

The data below is the "Team Recruiting Rankings" from 2006 - 2010 from Rivals.com  The enrolled rankings are used to weed out non-qualifiers.  Mississippi State shouldn't get extra credit for signing 33 in 2007 when a class can enroll a max of 25.

The classes are then weighted and averaged (WA) as followed to give more weight to upperclassmen over underclassmen.  Obviously the weighting isn't one size fits all.  Rivals only ranked a Top 50 in 2010, so any team outside of 50 received a ranking of 51 in 2010.

2006 - .15% - rSR
2007 - .35% - SR and rJR
2008 - .30% - JR and rSO
2009 - .15% - SO and rFR
2010 - .05% - FR

TCU, Boise State, Utah and BYU were included in the data, but didn't make the Top 60.

A few biases to consider when looking at the data.

1) Scouting services tend to focus more heavily on scouting the Southeast compared to the Northeast and the Midwest. Recruits for the Midwest and Northeast have a much better chance of falling through the cracks than prospects from the Southeast, Texas, California.  I doubt any scouting service has ever stepped foot in places like Wisconsin or Connecticut.

2) Schools with larger fanbases have a tendency to to have committed recruits get a "bump" in the rankings.
