Clemson and South Carolina Recruiting - Position By Position Breakdown

Recruiting Breakdown - Part I

Quarterback Recruiting

Tony McNeal - Clemson (5.7 - #15 Pro-Sytle QB, #12 in SC)
Tanner McEvoy - South Carolina (5.7 - #25 ATH, #11 in NJ)
Cole Stoudt - Clemson (5.6 - #21 Pro-Stlye QB, #43 in OH)
Martay Maddox - South Carolina - (#5.6 - 27 Dual-Threat QB, #68 in GA)

This is pretty much a push. Both schools landed a 5.7 and a 5.6 QB prospect. You really can't differentiated much here between the two classes.

Runningback Recruiting

Mike Bellamy - Clemson (6.1 - #5 RB, #25 Overall)
Shon Carson - South Carolina (5.7, #28 RB, #10 in SC)
Brandon Wilds - South Carolina (5.5 - NR RB, #30 in SC)
Colton Walls - Clemson (5.4)

Clemson has the edge here landing a 5-Star prospect at the position in Mike Bellamy versus a 3-Star prospect in Shon Carson. Obviously, RB wasn't a huge need for South Carolina with Marcus Lattimore being a Sophomore in 2011.

Wide Receiver Recruiting

Sammy Watkins - Clemson (6.1 - #3 WR, #15 Overall)
Charone Peake - Clemson (5.9 - #11 WR, #83 Overall)
Matavias Bryant - Clemson (5.9 - #1 Prep School)
Damierre Byrd - South Carolina (5.8 - #19 WR, #186 Overall)
Shamir Jeffrey - South Carolina (5.7 - #53 WR, #8 in SC)
K.J Brent - South Carolina (5.7 - #54 WR, #17 in NC)
Adam Humphries - Clemson (5.4)

Clemson landed the #1 WR class in the nation. WR was a huge need for the Tigers, so landed 3 huge prospects in Watkins, Peake and Byrant was huge. South Carolina has a solid WR haul as well lead by Byrd.

Tight End Recruiting

Eric MaClain - Clemson (5.9 - #6 TE, #59 Overall)
Jerrell Adams - South Carolina (5.7 - #17 TE, #11 in SC)
Drew Owens - South Carolina (5.7 - #19 TE, #14 in SC)
Rory Anderson - South Carolina (5.6 - #26 TE, #43 in GA)
Stanton Seckinger - Clemson (5.5)

I would give the slight edge to Clemson here because the Tigers landed by far the highest ranked prospect of the bunch in MacLain. However, Jerrell Adams is underrated and would make this a push if he were to qualify although Adams in likely headed to Prep School.

Offensive Line Recruiting

Brandon Shell - South Carolina (5.9 - #66 Overall)
Spencer Region - Clemson (5.7 - #23 OG, #16 in AL)
Shaq Anthony - Clemson (5.7 - #27 OT, #9 in SC)
Mike Matulis - South Carolina (5.7 - #33 OT, #65 in FL)
Isiah Battle - Clemson (5.7 - #36 in OT, #11 in VA)
Joe Gore - Clemson (5.7 - #26 SDE, #16 in NC)
Kyle Harris - South Carolina (5.6 - # 37 OG, #52 in GA)
Quincy McKinney - South Carolina (5.6 - #61 OT, #62 in GA)
Kaleb Broome - South Carolina (5.6 - JUCO)
Ryan Norton - Clemson (5.6 - #11 OC, #19 in SC)
Will Sport - South Carolina (5.5)

South Carolina signed 6 OL prospects to 5 for Clemson. I would give the slight edge to South Carolina because Brandon Shell is the only prospect that really separated himself from the pack. The other 10 prospects are all pretty similar type prospects and none really stand out from the others outside of Shell. Also helping SC is Battle is a long-shot to qualify and is likely headed to Prep School.

Defensive Line Recruiting

Jadeveon Clowney - South Carolina (6.1 - #1 SDE, #1 Overall)
Corey Crawford - Clemson (5.9 - #2 Prep School)
Kelcy Quarles - South Carolina (5.9 - #3 Prep School)
Phillip Dukes - South Carolina (5.8 - #9 DT, #101 Overall)
Gerald Dixon - South Carolina (5.7 - #25 WDE, #14 in SC)
Dean Green - South Carolina (5.6 - #50 DT, NR in FL)
DeShaun Williams - Clemosn (5.6 - NR DT, #18 in SC)
Roderick Byers - Clemson (5.6 - #49 SDE, #23 in SC)
Grady Jarrett - Clemson (5.5)
Gerald Dixon Jr - South Carolina (5.5)
Jerome Maybank - Clemson (5.3)

South Carolina has a better DL class by a large margin here. USC signed the best prospect and well as well as 4 out of the Top 5. The signed the best prospects at both DE and DT as well.

Linebacker Recruiting

Tony Steward - Clemson (6.1 - #1 OLB, #13 Overall)
Stephone Anthony - Clemson (6.1 -#3 OLB, #24 Overall)
LaTeek Townsend - Clemson (5.8 - #10 OLB, #172 Overall)
Marquis Roberts - South Carolina (5.7, #22 OLB, #30 in GA)
Mason Harris - South Carolina (5.6 - #47 OLB, #48 in GA)
Edward Muldrow - South Carolina (5.6 - #49 OLB, #50 in GA)
Cedric Cooper -South Carolina (5.6 - #61 OLB, #65 in GA)
BJ Goodson - Clemson (5.6 - NR OLB, #20 in SC)
Angelo Watley - South Carolina (5.6 - NR OLB, #80 in GA)

Clemson scored a big win here at a position of need landing the #1 LB Recruiting Class in the nation according to Rivals.com. South Carolina landed a bunch of quality players, but failed to land a marquee recruit at the position.

Defensive Back Recruiting

Sheldon Royster - South Carolina (5.8- #12 S, #189 Overall)
Cortez Davis - Clemson (5.8 - #14 S, #215 Overall)
Brinson Williams - South Carolina (5.8 - #6 Prep School)
Kendetrix Marcus - South Carolina (5.7 - #30 S, #28 in GA)
Ronnie Martin - South Carolina (5.7 - #46 CB, #15 in SC)
Ahmad Christian - South Carolina (5.7 - #39 ATH, #84 in FL)
Robert Smith - Clemson (5.6 - NR ATH, #22 in SC)

South Carolina had a better haul here, but DB wasn't a need for Clemson in 2010. The Tigers only signed 2 DB to 5 for South Carolina. Both signed one elite prospect, but South Carolina added lot of quality players as well.

Clemson and South Carolina Recruiting Class Comparison

Position By Position Breakdown

Both Clemson and South Carolina signed strong recruiting classes over in 2011.  Here is some analysis that I put together using Rivals.com data where 6.1 is a 5-Star, 6.0-5.8 is a 4-Star, 5.7-5.5 is a 3-Star and 5.4 and below is a 2-Star.  I am not going to draw a ton of conclusions and just let the reader interpreted the data.

Here are the combined Top 20 prospects between Clemson and South Carolina's classes.

1. Jadeveon Clowney - South Carolina (6.1 - #1 Overall)
2. Tony Steward - Clemson (6.1 - #13 Overall)
3. Sammy Watkins - Clemson (6.1 - #15 Overall)
4. Stephone Anthony - Clemson (6.1 - #24 Overall)
5. Mike Bellamy - Clemson (6.1 - #25 Overall)
6. Eric MacClain - Clemson (5.9 - #59 Overall )
7. Brandon Shell - South Carolina (5.9 - #66 Overall)
8. Charone Peake - Clemson (5.9 - #83 Overall)
9. Matavias Bryant - Clemson (5.9 - #1 Prep School)
10. Corey Crawford - Clemson (5.9 - #2 Prep School)
11. Kelcy Quarles - South Carolina (5.9 - #3 Prep School)
12. Phillip Dukes - South Carolina (5.8 - #101 Overall)
13. LaTeek Townsend - Clemson (5.8 - #172 Overall)
14. Damierre Byrd - South Carolina (5.8 - #186 Overall)
15. Sheldon Royster - South Carolina (5.8 - #189 Overall)
16. Cortez Davis - Clemson (5.8 - #215 Overall)
17. Brinson Williams - South Carolina (5.8 - #6 Prep School)
18. Shamir Jeffrey - South Carolina (5.7 - #53 WR, #8 in SC)
19. Shaq Anthony - Clemson (5.7 - #27 OT, #9 in SC)
20. Kendetrix Marcus - South Carolina - (#30 S, #28 in GA)

The last spot was really close between Kendetrix Marcus, Mike Matulis (USC) and Spencer Region (CU), but I went with Martin. You could really make a legit case for a handful of prospects here.

- Clemson has 8 out of Top 10 while South Carolina has 2 out of the Top 10.

- Clemson has 11 out of  Top 20 while South Carolina has 9 out of the Top 20.

Clemson clearly has an stronger top portion of the class when compared to South Carolina, but South Carolina is a little stronger in the middle portion of the class when compared to Clemson.

Here are the bottom 10 prospects combined between Clemson and South Carolina.

1. Jerome Maybank - Clemson (5.3)
2. Colton Walls - Clemson (5.4)
3. Adam Humphries - Clemson (5.4)
4. Aaron Lapkik - Clemson (5.4)
5. Morgan Roberts - Clemson (5.5)
6. Gerald Dixon Jr - South Carolina (5.5)
7. Stanton Seckinger - Clemson (5.5)
8. Will Sport - South Carolina (5.5)
9. Grady Jarrett - Clemson (5.5)
10. Brandon Wilds - South Carolina (5.5 - NR RB, #30 in SC)

- Clemson has 5 out of the Bottom 5.
- Clemson has 7 out of the Bottom 10 while South Carolina has 3 of the Bottom 10.

Clemson clearly has a weaker bottom to their class than South Carolina.

Here is a graph that shows the distribution of stars between Clemson and South Carolina.  You can see from the graph that Clemson is stronger at the top of the class and weaker at the bottom and South Carolina is a little stronger in the middle of the class.

I will break down the position rankings tomorrow.
