"Road Rock" Cheapens Clemson’s Greatest Tradition

The Greenville News ran an article today about Scott Patterson of Greer who presented Dabo Swinney with a mounted rock  from Death Valley. Swinney plans on taking the new rock on the road to away games and having it become a “road rock” to inspire the player’s prior to the game. I think Patterson presenting the rock to Swinney is a cool gesture, but I disagree with taking it on the road as a “road rock.” Clemson players rubbing Howard’s Rock and running down the hill has been around since 1967 and is one of the best traditions in College Football and bringing this new rock on the road only cheapens a great tradition. In most cases history is better left alone and this is one of those cases

Free Tickets In Exchange For Cheap Rates?

The State Newspaper published a story today about South Carolina football players receiving reduced room rates at The Whitney Hotel.  According to the story up to ten players had been staying at the luxury hotel for about $450 a month or about $15 per night, when the rate per room should have been closer to $1700 a month or $57 per night.

Who wouldn't enjoy complimentary breakfast buffet, high-speed internet access, maid service and limousine service for $15 a day?  Judging by The Whitney Hotel's website, this rate does not seem to be available to the general public, which would qualify as an extra benefit.

According to the article it is also alleged that at least two players had not made any payment for their room at all despite staying at The Whitney Hotel for close to three months and racking up a balances in excess of $5,000.  I don't know what the standard practice is for the Whitney Hotel, but how many college students are able to rack-up balances in excess of $5,000 without being evicted?  This begs the question of if the Whitney Hotel ever expected payment from these players?  Maybe the players promised free tickets in lieu of paying full rate?

It would seem obvious to any nuetral observer that the players were clearly given a reduction in rate and allowed to prolong paying their bill solely due to playing football at South Carolina. The NCAA has their best men on the case, which likely means that nothing major is going to happen to USC.

In the end, I would be shocked if the majority of players didn’t simple pay the difference in rental rates and be cleared to play against Southern Miss. I can see a few being suspended for a few games and a couple might be suspended for the entire season, but Clemson fans waiting on pins and needles for South Carolina to be hit hard with major infractions like lack of institutional control resulting in probation and loss of a number of scholarships are likely going to be end up disappointed.

Who is Gamecock Will?

Anybody who has listened to WCCP for any length of time is familar with Gamecock Will.  Gamecock Will calls into pretty much every radio show on WCCP every day with takes that are 75%  hate on Clemson and 25% delusion in regards to the Gamecocks.

Many have speculated the Gamecock Will is actually paid by WCCP to incite Clemson supporters to light up the phone lines.  Most probable think that Gamecock Will would be lucky to count to potato.

No word on if Gamecock Will is also a frequent contributor to the Wack Pack on Howard Stern.
